What makes the best breakfast for multi-day tramping, biking, & hunting trips?

This is a question we get asked a lot! What is the best way to start the day when on an adventure? It is very different from eating at home in our normal routine. The calorie expenditure is usually significantly higher, so our bodies need more energy to get us to our next destination and... being hungry one hour in is not a great feeling (leads to excessive grumpiness otherwise known as severe hanger pains).

How much breakfast should I eat?

Depending on the exercise level and length, our bodies require adequate calorie input. Some people think if there is a calorie deficit, they will just burn fat, but more and more research is showing that this isn't the case. We actually need to be fuelled to even access fat as an energy source.

So, where does that leave us? What is the best way to start our day? Remember when your mom always said to "start with a balanced meal?" and "breakfast is the most important meal of the day"? Well, she was right! Breakfast, or whenever you choose to break your fast, is a very important part of how our bodies move throughout the entire day. Eat too many carbs? They aren't very energy dense, they spike your insulin levels and you'll be hungry for lunch within an hour... not great (in the outdoors or anywhere). Not eat enough protein? Again, you'll not have the sustenance or fuel to get you to lunch, equating to not having enough energy to be powerful and strong on your adventure.

What is the best outdoor breakfast option in New Zealand?

The best breakfast we have tried for adventuring is Bushline Breakfast. Yes, we are biased... but these breakfasts really do pack a punch. Weighing in at 110g (before adding the water required for the meal), they are lightweight however, they have an energy density of 5 to 1 (530kcal per sachet). On top of that, they pack in 19g of plant-based complete protein, which is the sustenance we were talking about earlier. Bushline Breakfast also has fibre, which is a really important (and overlooked) component of meals, especially in the hills. Fibre keeps our gut working properly which ultimately keeps us a lot happier! With 13g of fibre per sachet, this is one-third of our daily fibre requirement, making it easier to keep... how might we say this... regular, when in new surroundings.

How does Bushline compare to others?

Comparing Bushline Breakfast to others, Bushline has all natural, whole food ingredients, no sulphites, no preservatives, no gluten, no dairy (vegan friendly), no fillers, no gums, and no numbers, to name a few. What does this mean and how does this benefit you when you are adventuring? Well, it keeps your body functioning and thriving, not just surviving. It leaves less to make your belly unhappy and more to make your body happy. We like this!

How is Bushline Breakfast packaging better for the planet?

Bushline Breakfast has taken it one step further by addressing the issue of single-use plastic packaging. Using home-compostable packaging with no plastic means it packs out light and isn't made out of a 'forever' plastic that leaves a heavy footprint on the planet.

In realizing everyone usually carries a bowl or cup of some sort, and being Bushline Breakfasts are instant and require no cooking... this means you just pour the contents into a bowl or cup, add water, and stir. Easy! This simple process of removing the need to mix and rehydrate a meal in its actual package means that the packaging can have a lighter footprint and doesn't contribute to the plastic issue the planet has in its landfills and oceans.

"I don't like breakfast, especially when I'm (insert activity: tramping, biking, kayaking, skiing)"

We hear this often and then after they try Bushline, they are back for more! They are packed with the right balance of flavours and textures to keep you wanting more. And, if you want to freshen it up a little, just add a pinch of brown sugar, or freeze-dried fruit (Little Beauties NZ raspberries are our favourite).
